When you snooze you lose. This is the message coach Guus Hiddink sent Tottenham and other teams in the Premier League when he agreed to be the coach of the Netherlands following the conclusion of the 2014 World Cup. Andre Villas-Boas, the current manager of Tottenham was relieved of his duties on Monday, December 16, 2013, but that firing could have taken place several weeks earlier.
The teams that are struggling in the Premier League, in particular a high profile team such as Tottenham Hotpur would have benefitted immensely from the presence of Hiddink on the pitch at practice and at matches. But, instead of the Spurs management having quiet discussions with him during the early part of the season when it was apparent that their coach Andre Villas-Boas was having difficulty gaining wins with his squad they waited and let the Netherlands national team beat them out for Hiddink’s services.
Guus Hiddink will now be unavailable to any team for the next four years as he will be the head coach of the Netherlands for two years and for the other two years he will be the technical director. If Tottenham had engaged in enterprising and innovative thought they might have used the tactic of Chelsea and persuaded him to coach for half the season while they engaged in a six month search for a new coach to take over upon his resignation.Hiddink took the rudderless team of Chelsea in 2009 after they fired their manager mid-season and steered them to a FA Cup win, a position in the finals of the UEFA Championship and third place in the Premier League.
Guus Hiddink's specialty is taking over teams that are struggling and using his technical expertise and immense footballer knowledge to correct the path of teams that are going in the wrong direction. Tottenham Hotspur missed out on the acquisition of one of the few coaches who would have been able to help the Spurs become a contender for a top five placing in the Premier League. In life one must learn from the actions of others. Its obvious from the actions or lack of action by the Spurs management that they did not learn anything from how Hiddink helped Chelsea save their season and as a result their season goals will remain on life support for the remainder of the season.
